3 Little Pigs and A Big Bad Wolf On A4 Paper

It was my last day in Penang, when my niece and I had a one-to-one moment at the living hall after having lunch together. She asked for a pen and a piece of blank paper. I gave her and she offered me a story which she’s learned in school.

cute girl

This was how the conversation took place. It’s a children classic story of ‘3 Little Pigs and A Big Bad Wolf’.

*****

Niece: Kelly gugu (which means aunty in chinese), I tell you a story.

Me: Ok. What’s that sweet heart?

Niece: *start drawing 3 imperfect circles with few black dotes*
There are 3 little pigs and they are brothers for each other. One day, the mother asked her children to leave the house and build their own houses.

Me: Em.. hm.. ok. Then?

Niece: The first pig built a straw house. The second pig built a wooden house. The last pig built a stone house *her right hand was drawing those houses out*

Me: Wow.. interesting. So?

Niece: One day, a wolf come. He went to the first pig and say, “pig ah pig.. open the door or I will blow your house”. The first pig say, “No.. no.. you naughty wolf. Go away”. The wolf laughed and immediately blew the house and the house was gone. So the first pig ran into second pig to hide himself. The house was blown by the wolf and both of them ran to the last pig *continue sketching*

Me: Aiyo.. scary lor.. then, then? *making myself interested*

Niece: Yes.. It’s scary. So the wolf try to blow the house but this time, the house can’t be blown away. The wolf climb.. climb.. climb.. to the roof and go into the chimney  and kelly gugu.. guess what happen?

Me: Emmm… dunno oh dear. What happen next? *pretending not knowing*

Niece: hahahahaha… I don’t want tell. Go ask teacher.. *stop drawing on the paper with tougue sticking out*

Me: Uh? Come back.. come back.

Niece: Haha.. Kelly gugu so stupid… 笨

Me: o________O!!
Today’s child is so naughty.

P/s: I think it’s creative to tell story while drawing the objects out. My niece has grown up and I happy to see that =)

Kids Are Creative

I still remember, years before this when I was completing Dr.Diana’s homework, I did explain on why I want to work with children and family population when I become a counselor in future. The reasons are pretty simple. Children are cute, genuine and innocent. They don’t need to cover themselves with masks to please anyone. However, these innocence and originality are easily ‘contaminated’ by the environment, especially by adults’ expectation. Simple examples like, parents will make children to color apple only with red, being disciplined to sit quietly even though they want to run around and wear certain selected color (pink for girls, blue for boys) from the wardrobe.

Of course, when it comes to teaching and learning, children should be taught in a proper manner in order to shape discipline and obedient persons. But sometimes, adults might not be aware that creativity and expressiveness of a child are restricted under such environment. Well, I am born in such a family background. So, I can pretty understand the limitation when one is growing up. I think, I can be another da Vincci or Piccasso if my parents and teachers are like Dr.Diana – do whatever we want as long as it is safe and not harmful. Lol.. just joking. Be a curryegg is better =P

I guess, having such understanding about originality, genuiness and creativity, I admire my own nieces and nephews sketches. Ya, serious! Although they are simple doodles, I awed at their own artworks.

I love the way they approached me when we were all gathered at my grandma’s 75th birthday at a restaurant last month and they went like, “Kelly jie jie (which in fact they should call me ah yee or aunt), you see you see! Nice or not?”. One of them will jumped on my laps, another pulled my hand to win my attention and another one just non stop talking. Well, they are 4 of them starting from the age of 8, 6, 5 and 2.

Their drawing are simple yet original. Believe me when I say this. Most adults (not even myself) is unable to draw something like this if I am to give you a pen and paper now. You will mostly draw a very straight, fine line of a house in a general and accepted way because in reality, they look that way. Or in another word, everyone should draw that ‘standard way’.

I don’t really understand all these creativity and originality stuff until I learned from my lecturers and my courses. Thus, now I am a fans of children’s uncontaminated drawing. Well, it is true.

Another sketches by Guan Rue – 6 years old

But these are not just the reasons of why I want to work with this population. They are some other reasons that actually intrigue my interest. Well, share next time if there is something I can relate with in future posts.

P/s: It is good to keep some of your childhood drawings because they are the most original work we have ever done without inserting others’ idea into our masterpiece. Mum has thrown away all my sketches before I turned 7. So, no more… =(

Squeeze Brain Squeeze!

In another 14 days, my art work will be collected and hang up in one of the famous art gallery in Malaysia organized by several organizations.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I should start thinking the range of possible prices which I want to put for my work. I wanna sell it and make money. Then I can buy a DSLR. Change my wardrobe. Eat buffet. Go travel. Muahahahaha…

But…….

Siiigghhh… How good if this happens. How marvelous if my day dreaming comes true. Well, there is nothing like famous ‘art gallery’ nor ‘several organizations’. I am just pulling your leg in order to make myself happier.. buuuuuu….. :(

Anyway, my artwork will definitely be hung up in an art gallery and it is in University Malaya. I have enrolled myself in a fine art class this semester as a co-curriculum subject and all the student’s masterpiece MUST BE SHOWN in the hall. Those who fail will get a big fat ‘GAGAL’ or ‘FAILED’ in the coming examination result slip.

And I don’t know how far I can handle this because... I haven’t do anything for it. I just started my shopping attempt this afternoon, surveying, scanning and buying those art stuffs which I need. Luckily, my visit to a nearby Popular Bookstore helped me in solving this problem. Thanks God!

There are plenty of stuffs which I can get from the store and I have no problem in looking for the right materials and tools. It means that I can start drawing and painting my 10” X 14” canvas within these 2 weeks.

These are the real oil pastels which I should get for my ‘oil-paint-project’. Each costs RM11.90 – RM 15. Oh dear.. However, my lecturer encourages the newbie (like me) to use something easier. I don’t have any basic for oil painting seriously.

This is called, the Arcylic Colour which is easier to be used. The differences are, you can use water to wash out the colour on the paper or canvas but not oil colour. You have to use turpentine if you use oil colour. Next, acrylic colour is much cheaper if compare to oil colour. Phewww.. Luckily I can save up some $$$.

No matter how cheap it is, this box still cost me RM38. Sob… I am so broke… T.T

Somehow, I haven’t picture anything in my mind. I have no idea what I wanna paint in this square white canvas. This does make me worry that I might not be able to meet the deadline, unless my inspiration comes in time (like it always happens).

Well, all I can do now is to sit quietly in a corner, relax and focus on the message which I want to deliver to the public.

Well, I hope my brain juice will not be drained off that soon. Amitabha..

The Lovely Dovey Secondary Artworks

It is good to be in touch with Art again after that long long break from Dr.D's class. Well, it has only be 3 weeks and I felt like 3 months. How I hope I can be in her class again in next semester or next next semester, or next next next semester. As long as I will have the chance to be with her again, I am happy. (Hmmm... Why do I feel so wrong with this sentence?)

But, sigh. I guess the possibility is low as she already told us that she can't be with us, again. Of course, if only if her application is accepted by the department. So, why not just pray hard and wish for something positive?

Talking about Art, it has reminded me about my secondary artwork. I used to have art classes back in my secondary school when it is a compulsory subject for every lower secondary students in Malaysia (even till now). Knowing that I loved Art so much, my parents allowed me to enroll in extra art classes, out from the school.

Because of their support, I managed to get a good art teacher who encouraged me to emphasize on watercolour work. He knows I love watercolour so much - which is true.

My best artwork. I love this kingfisher so so much.

I love drawing scenery, like this:

Other than watercolour artwork, I like sketching using only pencils and eraser. Emm.... something like this? Haha...

I love this a lot. How cute and lovely.

However, I hate the idea of an artwork being rated with marks or even grade as I believe that artwork shouldn't be rated based on the viewer's perspective but be understood and respected. In this case, the meaning of the art and the creator's hardwork should be taken account. No matter how good or bad a work might be, it shouldn't be graded as every art shows its own meaning and uniqueness.

It is good to look on those drawings again after being kept in the cupboard for years. Sweet memory was dancing around my mind while I examined every piece of my work. I am glad they still look good. Now I feel like producing more.

:)

P/s: There should be more drawings in my collection if only if my school art teacher returns them to me after the scanning for school magazine. Urrggg...

The Real Expressive Art Scene

I guess most of you still remember the Expressive Art Workshop which I had mentioned previously? I hope you will not forget my 'creation'. Haha.. Well, this time, I want to show you some of my friends creation which are good too. In fact, there is nothing like 'good' or 'bad' and no one should label others' work too because that is what we call expressive art.

Talking about how our society love making judgement on others work (or the person) is something which I hated so much. Awkward stares and unfriendly body languages really turn my mood off. It reminded me how I was being judged on my work which I thought it is pretty nice and OK but then, some people weren't agree with me and my work ended up in the trash. Not that they throw my work into the bin.

I did that because I was being graded with a big fat
'E'.

Notes: Some people here referred to my primary teachers.

That incident happened when I was still in my primary school. Since then, I have this 'perfectionist' trait evolved in me as I want to make things perfectly so that the same incident will not happen again. I guess that did affect me a lot both mentally and emotionally.

Anyway, my 'perfectionist' mode was being turn off when I was in this workshop as I want to express as freely as possible without worrying how my work will turn up. I know I am safe to be myself and I don't have to worry others mind. Being spontaneous and passionate have allowed me to explore my feeling - which is good.

That is how my creation is being created and I just so in love with my work. Most importantly, no grading is being carried out during in this workshop. That's mean, no one will grade your work either is an 'A' or 'Z' work. Frankly, this is something everyone should learn, not to grade an artwork. Instead, try to understand why it is being created and explore the creator's feeling and thinking. Every piece of creation means something and only the creator knows them well.

So, if you are a parent or a teacher, do take note that it is important to understand your children or your student from their 'creation'. Creation can be artwork, essay writing, games, dressing and etc. By observing their creation and asking for the meaning, you will understand the child better. This is what we call, expressive art.

I guess I have typed too far away from my main title. Oh gosh. It always happen when I am too excited about certain topic. Please forgive me.. :P

Dr. D's Expressive Art Workshop was fun and all of us were having good time being a creative and innovative creators. These are what my friends had done.

Most of my friends are good in making 3D art work and I am impressed. Frankly, I love the rose so much and I will never believed that a guy with an ENTP typology can make such a good stuff. Ok. I sound really judgemental here. Oopssie. Sorry. But then, I really love his rose and I thought of bringing back home (which he allowed me). However, I feel that it is good to let more people admiring his work. So, I decided to leave it in Dr.D's room (my California lecturer). Seriously, it is really an artistic work!

Besides, my friend Wan Yong can really make a good joker's hate. Isn't that wonderful? Just by using colour paper and within 2 hours, the work was done. Oh dear... lovely. And the bookmark leaf.. :)

There are more creations from others but I was too excited during that moment and had forgotten to snap every one of them. I was running, jumping and crawling. Lol.. I am just joking.. :P

In conclusion: Be yourself. Express yourself. Love your work.

My Creation During In Expressive Art Workshop

First of all...
I am back again! =)

I thought I could wrap myself with few rolls of toilet paper for at least.. a week? Oh my. How could I? I am so tempted to share something interesting right now. Ok. Forget about my exam for a few minutes shall we?

It is about my experience in one of the Expressive Art Workshop with Dr D, today. I mean, few hours ago. Nothing is as interesting as making our own art work with all kind of art stuff starting from glittering powder, colour paper, crayon, water colour (my favourite), leaves, bamboo sticks and etc. We were allowed to use anything which were provided. All we had to do is to pour in our creativity into the creation we planned to make.

We were given the freedom to make our own creation without any theme or guideline (because these will kill the creativity and innovation). Along the process, I enjoyed making my own creation. It felt like all my stress over my assignment and soon-to-be-coming exam were kept in a box for a moment.

Freedom, fun and flexibility were the only nouns I could think of while panting on the drawing paper..Well, I didn't even care how my drawing might turn out as the only goal I had in mind was to express whatever feelings I encountered on that piece of paper. Surprisingly, I did quite well because I love what I did.. :)

At the end of the workshop, I volunteered to share my work in front of the class with other participants. I was asked to describe the abstract that I drew in detail.

Guess what I have created?
Frankly, I love my spontaneous art work.. :D

I think it will be a good idea for me to keep my explanation on this drawing as a secret. Haha..
Maybe some of you can guess what is my creation means?
Any Da Vincci here?

Too Obsess With Curregg

Hey guys!
I am back again, finally...

Urrggg... Well, I just couldn't believe that I have successfully stopped myself from blogging for... 3 days? That's enough seriously. I can't ignore my blog more than the figure. Or else, those spiders, cockroaches (Oops.. I don't mean you, dead cockroach) and rats will start crawling on my blog.

Lol.. That's too much Curryegg.
=P

My disappearance was due to my preparation for my test. Obviously, the test has just over and I am here to update my blog. Lol.. . Those struggles and hard work are paid off because I could answer those questions pretty okay. Thank God. It is good to be free again (at least for these few days..sigh..)

Ok. So back to my topic: Too Obessess With Curryegg.

Unexpectedly, I am really too obsess with my own species lately and I just don't understand, why? My mind, my behaviour and even my smell- pose how a curryegg should be. Is this some kind of... curry disorder?

Uh.. Better not. I can't imagine having a new disorder, namely curry disorder in DSM-IV. No no... no..

Anyway, there is something I wish to share with you, due to my serious obsession with curryegg. Lately, I seemed to love drawing and sketching egg on my note book. I guess it was a result of the Boring Class Creates More Cartoonists post which has motivated my production of art work. The fact is, I didn't draw them during classes (I know it is a 'crime), but draw them purposely during my free time.

Wanna peep on my work?
Haha.. XD

Ta-da...

So, how are they?
Nice?

The happy hard-boiled-egg which has been cut into half is my mascot now. It is my own design and creation. Frankly, I really love it. I guess, this big, oval-shape-body with skinny hands and legs egg looks funny to me. Haha.. That's why I like drawing it so much.

As conclusion, I think I am seriously obsess with Curryegg.
Oh my~

Boring Class Creates More Cartoonists?

Sometimes, people around me perceive that I am such a hardworking student - especially my ex-classmates from secondary school and my course mates (now). Most of them will say things like..

"Wah.. Kelly. Why you never fall asleep one?"
"You look so motivated in class all the time"

"Why you always seemed busy jotting down notes?"

"You're sooooo hardworking"

Well.. well.. well.. I should claim that they are actually not knowing me well enough. If they are willing to spend a little more time on me, digging and exploring my notes from paper to paper, I believe they will change their perception immediately.

I have rarely fallen asleep in any class throughout my whole life no matter how boring the class might be. I just don't like making my teacher, lecturer or speaker to feel unappreciated and disrespected. Thus I don't snooze nor snore.

Wait. Did you ask me how I keep myself awake during in dull-boring-class?

What's the secret?

Haha..
I guess you just have to keep scrolling down your mouse and continue reading...

1) My work on my notes:

Never judge a book by its cover - remember. Lol..

So yes.
I draw to keep me awake. I did this since I was in primary school or maybe in elementary school? Well, I can't remember the exact time when I first started this activity. As far as I know, I do love to sketch. Besides, sketching and drawing can activate my cognitive system. I always believe that drawing will improve one's memory. It is like turning words into graphic which require lot of mental process.

I remembered once I heard a news in the TV not long ago, stating that teachers should not stop their students from sketching while the teaching process is taking place. The finding has shown that this sketching or drawing activity will actually improve the student's cognitive system (see! see!) which is good.

Further studies should be conducted by me in order to prove it right. Yeah. I want further proof both qualitatively and quantitatively... =P

So anyone of you here do or did this so called 'illegal activity' in class? Any juicy story or finding from you? Haha... I believe I can get quite a number of you here because I do meet with classmates and course mates who are in the same shoes as mine. We sketch during classes (especially boring one!) and this is one of the example:

2) My friend's work:

P/s: Shhhh.... To my dear course mates who read this. I believe you know who this person is. Don't report it or I will die of being tortured by S-Huan.

Of course, her sketches are way better than mine. I just simply love her drawing so so much. So cute, so real. I have a strong feeling that she can be a cartoonist if she develops herself in this field.

Boring class creates more cartoonist?
What do you think?

Curryegg's Art

Before answering anything for my previous post on where are those places in the photos, I have something interesting wanted to show you. Yes.. Something veli veli interesting...
Oh my...

I have sketched 2 pictures this afternoon and look at my art work! Nice?

Haha... they are inspired by my buddy, May. This is what she did... the pink nose pig. Haha.. cute?

Emm... I think we should create something unique and make our own cards or postcard. Then sell them!!!

Yes! Yes! Sell them and get $$$$
. Right now, I'm desperately wanting money. Muahahaha...

Why oh why? Well, remember my dream? I want to buy a DSLR digital camera using my money. Yes. 100% my own money..

But sigh. when will I get it?
I am still a student without any income...

*big sigh*

It's ok. Right now, I'm enjoying drawing something funny in the computer using my right hand. (Psst... I'm a left-handed). See, I can draw too using my right hand. Lolx... I think I should draw more starting by today.

*wink*
