In North America, "FFXIII" sold through more than 1 million units, during its first five days on the market, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. According to Square Enix, the franchise has sold more than 96 million units worldwide in its 20-year history.
"FFXIII" is noted as part of the 'Fabula Nova Crystallis' collection of "Final Fantasy" games and the first to utilize Square-Enix's 'Crystal Tools' engine, featuring both futuristic and natural elements, set between a land of wilderness and the high-tech world above it.
Following the story of main protagonist 'Lightning', Square Enix describes the theme of the game as "those who resist the world", taking place in the land of 'Pulse' where mechanical beings with godlike power have been created by a being called the 'Maker'.
